"In experimental nerve diseases in animals we are increasingly able to prevent nerve fiber degeneration and promote regrowth and functional restoration. Our goal is to bring the same capabilities to our patients."

Dr. John W. Griffin
Professor of Neurology, Neuroscience, and Pathology

Dr. John Griffin received his medical degree from Stanford University in 1968. He then completed internship and 1 year of Medicine residency at Stanford before coming to the Johns Hopkins Hospital to complete a residency in neurology. He also spent two years in fellowship training at the National Institutes of Health Medical Neurology Branch.

Formerly Director of the Neurology Department, Dr. Griffin is now a Professor of Neurology, Neuroscience and Pathology at Johns Hopkins and Director of the Brain Science Institute of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He is a former Javits Award holder of the National Institutes of Neurological diseases and Stroke and Past President of the American Neurological Association and the Peripheral Nerve Society. He is Editor of the neurological journal, Nature Neurology. Dr. Griffin focuses on peripheral nerve diseases, including small fiber sensory neuropathies and immune-mediated neuropathies such as the Guillain Barre syndrome and chronic inflammatory demyelinating neuropathy (CIDP).

Dr. Griffin’s research focuses on understanding the mechanisms of degeneration and regeneration in peripheral nerves, including the roles of growth factors and molecules within the ensheathing cell, the Schwann cell, that can protect axons. In addition, he studies immune-mediated injury to nerve.

Dr. Griffin currently sees patients at The Johns Hopkins Outpatient Center located in Baltimore on Tuesdays.
