Neuroimmunology and Neurological Infections Fellowship

The major goal of this fellowship program is to produce future generations of specialists with the knowledge and tools to diagnose, treat and prevent all infections and immune disorders of the nervous system. Infectious and immune disorders of the nervous system are closely related.

The fellowship provides board eligible or certified neurologists to train for 2-3 years in the clinical or basic science research skills and management of patients with disorders of the nervous system due to dysregulation of the immune system or due to infectious diseases. The fellow will have the opportunity to participate in a number of specialty clinics that include the Multiple Sclerosis clinic, the Transverse Myelitis, Neuro-AIDS clinic and the Neuromuscular clinic. Besides, they will rotate on an inpatient consult service geared towards the care of patients with the above disorders. They will also have the opportunity to participate in active international research programs in neuro-infectious diseases in Africa and Asia. The research program consists of didactic courses in biostatistics, bioethics, clinical trial design, grant writing workshop, Neuroimmunology and a Neurovirology. They will have the opportunity to participate in on going clinical trials, design and conduct a cross sectional study. They will have the ability to choose from a wide variety of ongoing basic science projects in the laboratories of the faculty within the division. These include state of the art techniques in proteomics, lipidomics and genomics in addition to core neuroscience and immunology and virology. The fellows are encouraged to write and submit fellowship grant proposals to national funding agencies. Each fellow will have a primary mentor and an advisory committee.

Interested individuals may contact Dr. Avindra Nath, Director, Division of Neuroimmunology and Neurological Infections. Applicants specifically interested in clinical Multiple Sclerosis Fellowships should contact Dr. Peter Calabresi, Director of the Multiple Sclerosis Center. (see How to Apply).
