Does your program guarantee a position for the General Surgery Internship?
Our program is integrated with the Johns Hopkins General Surgery residency program. Therefore, if you match with us for Neurosurgery, you are automatically guaranteed a position for your General Surgery Internship year. There is no need to apply separately to General Surgery unless you would choose to do so for other reasons.
What matching program do you use?
Beginning with the 2009 Match, we will participate in the National Residency Match Program (NRMP).
What kind of application do you accept?
We require that application be made through the Electronic Residency Aspplication Service (ERAS). You can visit their website to learn about the requirements and how to apply.
Can I submit materials in addition to what is required by ERAS?
Yes, you can send us any additional materials you wish, however we do not require anything more than what is needed to complete the CAS application. If you have additional materials you wish to submit, please mail these items directly to

When and how will you notify candidates about interviews?
We typcially begin reviewing applications by early October. Once the Dean's letters are received, (shortly after November 1) final selections are made regarding those candidates we wish to invite for interviews. All applicants selected for interview will be contacted simultaneously via e-mail. If no response is received within 24 hours, or if there is no e-mail available, applicants will be contacted by telephone. Generally, the interview notification time period occurs during the 2nd or 3rd week of November.
Does your program accept International Medical Graduates?
Yes.
What kind of visa do you offer foreign nationals?
The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine supports the use of the ECFMG sponsored J-1 for clinical trainees. We do not offer H-1B1 visas except to foreign nationals who are graduates of U.S. medical schools.
Do you have USMLE score requirements and other specific qualifications for IMGs?
We do not have specific requirements for foreign medical graduates. Every application is considered on an individual basis. However, all IMGs must have be certified by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).
Is clinical experience in the United States required?
Prior clinical experience in the United States is advantageous. However, candidates can be accepted into the program without previous U.S. clinical training.
