Hopkins Dean, Edward Miller, Announces the Launching of the Brain Science Insitutite

February , 2007

I'm pleased to announce the launch of a Brain Science Institute (BSI) at Johns Hopkins Medicine that will transform the field of neuroscience by forging interdisciplinary collaborations among those in direct brain-based research, geneticists, engineers and imaging experts. Its faculty will be drawn from basic and clinical neuroscience departments, other institutes and departments in the School of Medicine, as well as other schools within the University.

Jack Griffin, who formerly led the Department of Neurology, will serve as institute director and Richard Huganir, director of the Department of Neurosciences, will serve as associate director. An advisory group consisting of members from 14 departments, including the core departments of Neuroscience, Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry, will help guide the institute.

This exciting new endeavor has been made possible by a grant from a generous anonymous donor.

Hopkins has considerable depth when it comes to research and treatment of brain disorders, but we've never brought these resources together for maximum impact. Creating the Brain Science Institute will allow us to recruit new talented investigators and centralize core technology and funding opportunities.

Johns Hopkins has an extraordinary faculty and a unique culture of collaboration that should enable BSI research groups to address fundamental questions in neuroscience as well as immediate needs in the treatment of neurological and psychiatric diseases. To foster the translation of discovery into therapies, the institute will explore novel partnerships with industry, foundations and other institutions.

In its first year, the BSI intends to create:
  1. The Center for Neurogenetics, which will establish core research platforms and support novel interdisciplinary research teams.
  2. The Center for Cognition, Behavior and Brain Imaging, which will support interdisciplinary research teams in new ways, including imaging brain functions.
This is an exciting move for Hopkins Medicine. It will help us continue our leadership role in both the research and treatment of brain disorders.

Edward D. Miller
Dean of the Medical Faculty
